Preparing Custom Electronics for Manufacturing

A working prototype is not yet a manufacturable product. These are the steps that close the gap.

Preparing Custom Electronics for Manufacturing

Design for manufacturing (DFM)

Component packages, placement spacing, panelisation and solder-mask design must suit the assembly process. Early feedback from the intended manufacturer avoids surprises.

BOM robustness

  • Approved alternates for critical parts
  • Lifecycle status checks
  • Lead-time awareness
  • Consistent manufacturer part numbers

Production test strategy

Decide what is tested and how: visual or automated optical inspection, in-circuit testing, functional testing with a fixture and firmware self-test. Test points and programming access must be on the board.

Documentation package

Assembly drawings, fabrication notes, programming instructions and test procedures enable a manufacturer to build the product consistently.

Pilot run

A small pilot batch validates the process, yields and test coverage before committing to volume. Lessons learned are fed into a final revision.
